Friendly Visitor Program

SPECIAL PEOPLE WANTED

The number of seniors living alone in our community with no assistance, no family or friends nearby is staggering.  The loneliness and sense of isolation are depressing and destructive.  An 81 year old widow, alone and with no means of transportation, recently told us, "Just knowing that I could have a different life, a friend to visit me or take me out once in a while, gives me hope."  Are you interested in providing a little hope?

The Association for Senior Citizens is recruiting kind, caring, volunteers to spend about two hours per week with isolated seniors living at home.  Typical actives include:  home visits and phone calls just to chat or to check on a senior's welfare; running errands, such as grocery shopping, either for or with a senior; assisting with hobbies or other special interests; reading or taking walks.

Adults 18 years of age or older may volunteer as a friendly visitor.  For an application, call the Association for Senior Citizens at 303 455-9642 or drop by our offices at 2839 W. 44th Avenue.  Our office hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 to 4.

The Friendly Visitor Program is designed to help senior citizens maintain independent living. Friendly Visitor volunteers provide  for able-bodied seniors who prefer the warm, familiar surroundings of their own home to living in a senior facility or someone else's household.

The Friendly Visitor Program is operated by The Association for Senior Citizens (ASC), a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of Metro Denver seniors.

Friendly Visitor Program At Work

As a result of the Friendly Visitor Program, a "match" was made for a gentleman who wished to record his life experiences, which in turn might help others. Mr. William Payne, retired radio announcer, P.R. director, editor and extensive traveler, was unable to write 10 years after suffering a stroke which paralyzed his entire right side. He contacted our volunteer coordinator and asked if we had a volunteer who could write for him as he dictated. We were able to fulfill this need thanks to a Friendly Visitor volunteer.
