THE ASSOCIATION FOR SENIOR CITIZENS PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

Emergency Financial Assistance Program
Provides financial assistance to the elderly (over 55) who face eviction, public service or water shutoff, emergency medical prescriptions, optical or other emergency needs.  Bus fare is also provided to clients who need it

Grandparents Supporting Grandchildren
More of our elderly clients already living in poverty are now becoming the sole support for their grandchildren.  Recently an 82 year old native American woman had her utility bill of $182.03 paid by ASC.  She is the sole support for her granddaughter and great -granddaughter.  Imagine this responsibility - on a monthly income of $712.15!  We also paid the $269.44 utility bill for a 60 year old Hispanic woman who cleans houses for $600 per month while maintaining sole responsibility for her granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.

Emergency Medical Equipment Program
The Association for Senior Citizens loans walkers, canes, crutches, prosthesis and/or wheelchairs to the elderly at no charge for as long as the equipment is needed.

Emergency Robbery Victim Assistance Program
Any person over 55 who has been a victim of robbery, theft of social security check or OAP may present a copy of the police report and the Association for Senior Citizens will give a client up to $100 to sustain them.  In addition, the organization provides smoke alarms and deadbolt locks in conjunction with area businesses as a preventive measure.

In-House Jobs Program
Part-time employment with on-the-job training is provided within the organization to seniors to relieve the ongoing financial burden of low fixed incomes.

Friendly Visitor Program
The Association for Senior Citizens matches volunteers with homebound seniors as a "friendly visitor".  These individuals provide companionship only and do not clean, perform personal hygiene assistance or administer medication.

Meals on Wheels Delivery
An Association for Senior Citizens delivery person picks up meals from Volunteers of America and delivers them to the homebound.

Food Bank
Each Thuresday the Association for Senior Citizens distributes one or two free bags of food for the elderly, coming into the office between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.  The food is purchased from the Food Bank of the Rockies and supplemented with staple items purchased from local food chains.  The Association for Senior Citizens maintains a pantry for emergency food needs as well.

Distribution of Government Commodities
The Association for Senior Citizens distributes commodities received from Volunteers of America City Harvest Program, to people who have properly completed the commodity registration card.  The Association for Senior Citizens, as a Denver agency, is authorized to distribute to Denver residents only.  Commodities are distributed on the last Tuesday of the month.

Warmup Clothing / Blankets
Any Senior in desperate need of clothing or a blanket will be given clothing or a blanket free of charge.  All clothing and blankets have been donated.

Living Will Distribution
The Association for Senior Citizens distributes living wills to those seniors desiring to be removed from life support systems,  If the patient has been determined to be terminal.  The will must be witnessed and notarized.

Low Income Housing Winona Court Senior Home
Winona Court is a shared living concept providing affordable housing to the elderly (62 and older or disabled) who are able to live independently.  The home will house eight low-income, elderly people.

Counseling, Information and Referral
The Association for Senior Citizens offers case counseling to emergency financial assistance clients who require more long-term assistance than the regular programs may provide.  The Association for Senior Citizens will also provide information and referral to seniors seeking information on everything from assisted living facilities to home weatherproofing.

Bi-Annual Newsletter
The Association for senior citizens publishes a newsletter twice annually to provide the general public with information and awareness of the programs and services offered by the organization.

Benefits Checkup
ASC case managers enter non-personal information about the client into an internet program, www.benefitscheckup.org, to compile a list of programs and benefits for which the clients might also be eligible for.
